Dynamic interactions at the mineral–organic matter interface

چکیده

Minerals are widely assumed to protect organic matter (OM) from degradation in the environment, promoting persistence of carbon soil and sediments. In this Review, we describe mechanisms processes operating at mineral–organic interface as they relate OM transformation dynamics. A broad set interactions occur, with minerals adsorbing compounds their surfaces and/or acting catalysts for reactions. can serve redox partners through direct electron transfer or by generating reactive oxygen species, which then oxidize OM. Finally, compartmentalization sediment creates unique microsites that host diverse microbial communities. Acknowledgement multiplicity suggests general assumption mineral matrix provides a protective function is overly simplistic. Future work must recognize adsorption condition further reactions instead final destination adsorbates, should consider spatial functional complexity characteristic environments where mineral–OM observed. interact soils sediments, impacting biogeochemical cycling ecosystem functioning. This Review describes major emerging environmental observed, implications persistence.

Albumin-fatty acid interactions at monolayer interface

The fluid mosaic model of Singer and Nicolson in 1972 shows how proteins are embedded in membranes. To elucidate the interactions between proteins and the surrounding lipids, stearic acid (SA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) were used as lipid-protein components to mimic the normal membrane bilayer environment using the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. Surface pressure (π)-molecular area (A) isother...

Refraction at the Interface of a Lossy Metamaterial

The refraction phenomenon at the interface of an ordinary material and a lossy metamaterial has been investigated. For oblique incidence on the lossy metamaterial, the planes of constant amplitude of the refracted wave are parallel to the interface and the plane of constant phases make a real angle with the interface (real refraction angle). The real refraction angle and hence, the real refract...

Enzyme-inhibitor interactions at the plant-pathogen interface.

The plant apoplast during plant-pathogen interactions is an ancient battleground that holds an intriguing range of attacking enzymes and counteracting inhibitors. Examples are pathogen xylanases and polygalacturonases that are inhibited by plant proteins like TAXI, XIP, and PGIP; and plant glucanases and proteases, which are targeted by pathogen proteins such as GIP1, EPI1, EPIC2B, and AVR2. Th...

Bile acid-surfactant interactions at the liquid crystal/aqueous interface.

The interaction between bile acids and surfactants at interfaces plays an important role in fat digestion. In this paper, we study the competitive adsorption of cholic acid (CA) at the sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-laden liquid crystal (LC)/aqueous interface formed with cyanobiphenyl (nCB, n = 5-8) and the mixture of 5CB with 4-(4-pentylcyclohexyl)benzonitrile (5PCH). We find that the critical c...
